Benefits of Dancing

Face it: you’re going to be at a party. There will be music. There will be dancing. What will you be doing?

The number of people taking dance lessons worldwide is increasing, with dance allowing people to be healthier, more social, and happier… all while developing creative skills and relieving stress.

Dancing is a great way for people of all ages to get and stay in shape. Besides being fun and healthy, dancing has many other positive benefits...

The short-term effects of dancing on the mind are related to mood and satisfaction, while the long-term effects are related to discipline and memory.

Dancing is an excellent form of exercise because it not only burns calories and builds muscles, but it also contributes to an overall sense of happiness. Of course, all exercise releases endorphins, but dancing has an increased effect in this realm because it's not only the physical activity, but also the music, that affect the mind.

Endorphins are released when the body is forced to exert itself at a certain level. You may have heard of a 'runner's high'; because dancing is a similar activity, this same boost in mood can be achieved through dancing. In addition to the physical activity of dancing, when dancing is also a performance, adrenaline and endorphins work together to create a dramatic 'dancer's high'.

Dancing also affects the mind by contributing to a sense of satisfaction. While you may not reach new goals each day that you dance, you will have the satisfaction of knowing that you worked hard towards reaching those goals. Sweating through a series of exercises can be very satisfying even if change comes about at a pace so slow that you can't see the improvement. In the long term, you will see the fruits of your efforts from year to year, but on a day-to-day basis, most dancers feel very satisfied with having completed their exercises, worked on their turnout, and done their daily stretch routine.
Built up stress can weaken the immune system and lead to disease. Therapists and other professionals have used dance throughout time to alleviate stress, reduce tension, and eliminate anxiety. Self-expression and physical movement allow the body and mind to forget all worries. Phoenix Dance Company will take you on a journey to a world where music and self-expression create an alternate reality which revolves around excitement, passion and expertise.
As you improve your dance skills and advance towards the higher levels, you will find that dancing is a both a mental and physical discipline. Perfecting your technique and learning advanced dance moves requires focus and dedication. The positive effects of practicing dance will radiate into other aspects of your life.
One of the most rewarding aspects of dance is the ability to explore your creativity, invent new steps and new means of expression! At Phoenix we can help you to choreograph custom dance routines for dance competitions and performances.
A 21-year study by the Albert Einstein College of Medicine proved that ballroom dancing is the best way to prevent neurological degeneration such as Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia. “Making rapid decisions and movements in social dancing increases neural network connectivity and overall intelligence.”

Dancers also become very good at learning things quickly and methodically because of how often they learn new dance moves.

Ballroom dancing increases the amount of synovial fluid around the joints. This greatly improves mobility. Continuous stretching through dance will strengthen and lengthen your muscles, therefore making you more flexible. This helps prevent many injuries. Make sure to stay hydrated!
